August 25 Events: Theater District and So Much Music!

The Houston Fringe Festival is happening until August 28. Otherwise, check out Alonzo tonight, one of the DJs on Friday, and one (or more) of the music acts on Saturday and Sunday. And absolutely don’t miss the Theater District Open House on Sunday!

Thursday, August 25
P.S. World Peace A Solo Show by Escapist Alonzo Karahamuheto at 1218 Heights Blvd. at 6pm as a part of John Ross Palmer’s program for supporting up-and-coming artists. Alonzo’s work is dope. That’s all I’ll say. ‘What the Hatch?’ Brews and Bites at Omni Houston Hotel at Westside at 6pm has free beer and food. Designer Kemi Alao is launching her brand KYRA for men and women with a pop-up shop at 4211 Fannin with DJ Jay Tovar spinning at 7pm. Secret Group Satellite Annex #8 at AvantGarden at 9pm lets you hang out with local comedians with cheap drinks and tacos. And I think free Topo Chico for the teetotalers. The Waxaholics x producer Scoop DeVille at Alley Kat at 8pm means the popular Thursday night hangout for young professionals might be exceptionally crowded.

Friday, August 26
Float & Flick at the Hotel Derek showing Jurassic Park at 6pm, $15.  Revolutionary Feminism: “Black Feminism” Week 10 at The Montrose Center at 7pm for those interested in the series on feminism they’re doing. DJade Media Presents FU Fridays! At Dan Electro’s at 8pm so check out one of the DJs that I enjoy in Houston. DJ Jay Tovar will be spinning a Pharrell-themed set at The Commoner in honor of the classic N.E.R.D. album In Search Of… turning 15 this year. I’d say get there around 11pm.

Garage Sale at 2918 Cleburne! Go get all of the things!

Saturday, August 27
First things first: two dope artists are having a garage sale and they have so many random machetes and books and lighting equipment at 2918 Cleburne starting at 10am. FREE Yoga in the Park – Savasana into Summer Series at Hermann Park with meditation at 8:15am and then yoga at 8:30am. It’s free so why not as long as it doesn’t rain. Grand Opening Party at Under the Radar Brewery at 10am throughout the day until 8pm. Again rain-dependent. Reimagine Sunnyside at Sunnyside Park will have fun community activities and engaging discussions starting at noon. Omega Lucha: Lucha Libre / Mexican Wrestling at Arena Theatre at 6pm, $10. Who isn’t curious about Mexican luchadores? Houston Roller Derby 2016 Championships Event at Revention Music Center at 6pm (for prime seating for the 7pm bout). If you’ve never been to a roller derby match I guarantee you this will be a good time. Tickets at the door are $18. Mind Shrine Live at Aloft Galleria at 8pm. I saw this group perform at FreshDark Fest and I’ve been meaning to catch them again. The Hue Life Music & Art Social Series (#HueMASS) • Installation 3 :: Lightworks at Houston Area Urban League at 9pm, $20 at the door. You’ll see a lot of popular local faces here. A solid show every time.

Sunday, August 28
The Artisan Market at the Phoenix (last one of the year) at 11am. Come out and buy various artisanal craft and food goods. Theater District Open House at the Hobby Center at 12pm. This is the event not to miss this weekend. Get a taste of the opera, ballet, symphony, and every other major fine performing arts group for free and pick up some season tickets. Songwriter Sundays: Kristal Cherelle, Brad Boyer at Dean’s Downtown at 8pm. I’m a fan of Kristal Cherelle so go support her unless… Marium Echo at Alley Kat at 8pm. I go wherever Marium is singing. WHEREVER. If you get there early DJ duo Soul Control will be playing perfect music to lead into her set. Tip your bartenders and they’ll take care of you.

Monday, August 29
Axelrad Movie Night Double Feature w/ Odell: No Country for Old Men at 8:30pm and Burn After Reading! I need to watch No Country again but I love the ridiculousness of Burn After Reading.

Tuesday, August 30
How Racial Formation and Inequality Happen in Urban Housing Market at Rice University at 12pm. Come see a doctoral candidate talk about her research in Houston if you can get away on your lunch break. If you were watching Beyonce at the VMAs you saw Houston rapper Ingrid who is signed to the Parkwood Entertainment label. She’s continuing her residency at the House of Blues at 7pm with Michele Thibeaux opening!

Wednesday, August 31
Sundown at The Grove at 5:30pm. Beer and food pairings. It’s the last one of the season. Award-winning real estate developer Joe Minicozzi lecture at United Way of Greater Houston at 6pm if you’re interested in thinking about how the city can be planned more optimally with the Kinder Institute.
