Houston Events: April 10 – April 16

Here’s my I Don’t Do Clubs list of events for the week. As always, check back since I may add more! Also I’m doing a giveaway for Dreamgirls tickets this Sunday just for y’all!

1. DREAMGIRLS THE MUSICAL
Monday, April 10, 2017 – Sunday, April 16, 2017
Dreamgirls is a love letter to a time when the music of Motown reigned supreme. If you somehow didn’t see the movie, it’s a winner of seven Tony Awards and two Grammys, Dreamgirls tells the story of The Dreams’ first break to their tumultuous climb to top of the charts. Follow this female trio’s journey, both behind the scenes and onstage, through the changing musical and cultural climate of the 1960’s and 70’s. Learn more here.

2. GENESIS BLU EP LISTENING PARTY
Tuesday, April 11, 2017, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Houston rapper Genesis Blu has a new EP and The Secret Group is a great venue to hear it. She’s an excellent introduction to the Houston music scene. Coincidentally, on the same night as this free listening party The Secret Group also has bingo, dollar wells, and open mic comedy. If you haven’t been yet go check out this fairly new EaDo spot. 3. STRAIGHT NO CHASER WEDNESDAYS: DEATH ROW RECORDS
Wednesday, April 12, 2017, 8:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.
The Straight No Chaser Wednesdays team is always hard at work curating the ultimate listening experiences for true music connoisseurs. Raise your drink with DJ Flash Gordon Parks and hosts Savvi and Equality from H.I.S.D. This long-running event that used to be monthly now brings you original concepts each and every Wednesday with a different theme. Learn more here.

4. BOILER ROOM X BUDWEISER HOUSTON
Wednesday, April 12, 2017, 9:00 p.m. – 12:30 a.m.
This event returns to Houston for a night of epic proportions. They’ll be paying tribute to H-Town’s chopped-n-screwed great DJ Screw — with Bun B, Slim Thug, Paul Wall, Michael “5000” Watts and OG RON. Sounds like a good time but you have to request an invite. Learn more here.

5. EMERGE: CELEBRATING NEW INDUCTEES OF EMERGING 100 HOUSTON
Thursday, April 13, 2017, 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
Join 100 Black Men of Houston as they convene to celebrate the new inductees of their young professionals group: Emerging 100 Houston. It will be a soiree you don’t want to miss. Sounds will be provided by DJ Red Soda and you get the rooftop ambiance and views of Aroma Bistro. Learn more here.

6. NEXT UP – THE EADO EDITION
Thursday, April 13, 2017, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Entrepreneurs who are ready to take the next step will have the chance to pitch a panel of seasoned business owners who have learned to make EaDo work for them. Grab your drink, enjoy some lite bites and listen to businesses tell their stories. The audience will engage in live voting for their favorite pitches following the presentations. Learn more here.

7. BLACK GIRLS GATHER: HOUSTON
Thursday, April 13, 2017, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Black Girls Gather brings Black women together for an evening of conversation in support of community building and sisterhood guided by For Harriet’s editor-in-chief, Kimberly Foster. Refreshments will be provided. Learn more here.

8. DONKEEBOY AND FRIENDS ART SHOW
Friday, April 14, 2017, 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Join 8th Wonder resident artist, Donkeeboy, & some of his friends for a night of local Htown art. Artists include Sylvia Roman, Cutthroat, Jessica Rice, Skeez181, Lee Carrier, El Nacho, Mariel Bathan, & Elizabeth Umanzor! DJ Gonz with the jams. Admission is FREE! Learn more here.

9. LIME N’ VIBE CARIBBEAN KICKBACK
Friday, April 14, 2017, 11:00 p.m. – 3:00 am.

10. 89 MILES, MUSIC & ART SOCIAL
Saturday, April 15, 2017, 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
89MILES presents to you its first annual music and arts social event. They will be providing a social atmosphere that will allow you to experience good music and unique artwork from artists in the state of Texas. Food will be catered and available for purchase and your admission into this event includes an open bar. Learn more here.

11. 1800 STOP SNITCHIN (OPENAUXNIGHT)
Saturday, April 15, 2017, 9:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Another Open Aux night for the dj’s and producers out here in these streets. Local DJs and producers will play new joints never before played in public. And it’s free. Learn more here.

12. THE SHAKEDOWN FEATURING JOSH ZULU
Saturday, April 15, 2017, 10:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.
The star-studded cast of Houston DJs and strong drinks at Montrose bar The Flat are guaranteed to keep you dancing. Every third Saturday you get a mix of house, garage, disco, soul, and funk music all blended together for a good time! Learn more here.

LEADERSHIP AND COMPASSION: A DISCUSSION WITH MARGUERITE BARANKITSE
Thursday, April 13, 2017, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Join the Baker Institute in honoring the mission and work of Ms. Barankitse, who will share the story of Maison Shalom — and of her commitment to the prevention of violence and genocide and to the stabilization of Burundi, now and in the future. Marguerite Barankitse founded Maison Shalom (House of Peace), a community where Hutu and Tutsi children — most of them orphaned — receive care, education and support as they begin their lives in the wake of the civil war. Learn more here.

Houston Arts Alliance (HAA) is pleased to announce the next steps in the implementation of Houston’s Arts + Cultural Plan. Please join HAA grants staff, artists, arts leaders, other grantees, and consultant, Margie Johnson Reese of MJR Partners for a series of conversations for artists (Monday), arts organizations (Tuesday), and the general public (Wednesday).
