Music on Television

I’ve been thinking of the role of television in introducing me to new music, and took a moment to jot down a few memorable songs that I’ve come to appreciate over the years. Here’s a playlist to listen to them all together.

1. Frank Ocean – Thinkin Bout You

Heard on: Awkward Black Girl

2. Fiona Apple – Limp

Heard on: Daria

3. Ana Tijoux – 1977

Heard on: Breaking Bad

4. Ari Lennox – La La La La

Heard on: Black and Sexy TV

5. Gwen Bunn – Epitome

Heard on: Black and Sexy TV

6. Massive Attack – Teardrop

Heard on:  House

7. La Roux – Bulletproof

Heard on: Misfits

8. Bells Atlas – Incessant Noise

Heard on: Fashion Fair presents Say Yes by Ava DuVernay

Honorable Mention – Insecure

Honorable mention goes to Issa Rae’s Insecure because while I didn’t discover new music on the show I was continually impressed and surprised by the music featured. Check out the playlist here!

Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim probably warrants its own post. Also Black and Sexy TV introduced me to many new artists through their shows so that’s a perfect excuse to plug the GOAT web series That Guy. I’m sure I’ll write a post devoted solely to that show eventually. That’s eight songs I love that I discovered from TV, along with solid TV recommendations in case you need something to keep you busy this weekend. Enjoy!
