I forgot that I don’t have to actually write a post for I Don’t Do Clubs this week, so I wrote one anyway. Have a great Thanksgiving! As always you can subscribe to my newsletter to get these in your inbox.
1. E V E R Y T H I N G
Monday, November 21, 2016, 10:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m.
DJs Auditory and Jay Tovar both play a wide range of music all meant to make you dance. Arlo’s never disappoints (personally I love the fog machine) and I bet you’ll have a nice crowd since many people aren’t working this week. Learn more here.
2. LAWNDALE LIVE
Tuesday, November 22, 2016, 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
You get to watch a live taping of this weekly sketch show that features hilarious skits, great music, and guests from Houston’s creative community. If it’s good enough for Mayor Parker (an upcoming guest), you might consider it worth showing up. Seating starts at 6 p.m., taping starts at 7 p.m. Learn more here.
3. CHEERS FOR CHARITY WITH THE HIVE SOCIETY
Wednesday, November 23, 2016, 7:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.
Analogue Wednesdays is joining with millenial nonprofit The Hive Society to “adopt” families and provide them with gifts for the holidays. You get to hear music from Eimaral Sol (whose latest song Need Somebody is the jam) and there’s also an open mic! Learn more here.
4. TAILORED WEDNESDAYS: CUSTOMER APPRECIATION NIGHT
Wednesday, November 23, 2016, 8:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.
Free steak dinner with a drink purchase. I don’t know how that works for them but yes. Also you get a chance to check out Video DJ Sly Foxx playing some of your favorite neo soul songs along with new ones. Learn more here.
5. STRAIGHT NO CHASER VOL. 84: ‘SOULQUARIANS’ LISTENING
Wednesday, November 23, 2016, 8:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.
You can’t call yourself a music head if you’re unfamiliar with The Soulquarians. This major collective counted among its membership Questlove, J Dilla, Erykah Badu, Common, Q-Tip, Bilal, Raphael Saadiq, and others who shared musical styles as well as Aquarius birthdays. After this ends I bet you’ll see many people head to Avant Garden. Learn more here.
6. SHABBA RANKS-GIVING
Wednesday, November 23, 2016, 10:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m.
I don’t think I give reggae enough love on here. This is my attempt to rectify that situation while giving you a chance to hear two quality DJs (Good Grief and SoulOne) at The Davenport which is known for its strong drinks. And no they won’t be playing A$AP Ferg. Learn more here.
7. H-E-B THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE
Thursday, November 24, 2016, 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
It’s Thanksgiving. If you’re the type to get up early and enjoy parades head to City Hall for the 67th annual parade. You’ll see floats, bands, balloons, and everything else a standard parade has to entice you out of bed at 9am when you don’t have to work. Learn more here.
8. THE FIRST NOEL: HARLEM-SET HOLIDAY MUSICAL
Tuesday, November 22, 2016 – Sunday, November 27, 2016
This musical centers around a Harlem family dealing with a loss around the holidays. The Ensemble Theatre had a strong 2015-2016 season so I’m sure this will be fun. Discounted tickets for Friday and Saturday are available from Goldstar. Learn more here.
9. CONCERT: ROSEWOOD THIEVZ + FUNKSGIVING ALLSTARS
Friday, November 25, 2016, 8:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.
I don’t know how to classify Rosewood Thievz as a group but they’re fun to watch live with a new EP out. If you’re interested in Houston rap you get to catch Flyger Woods as well. Tickets are only $10. Learn more here.
10. THE SUFFERS W/ JMSN, ISHI + AFTERPARTY BY THE WAXAHOLICS
Saturday, November 26, 2016, 7:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.
The Suffers are a homegrown big band getting international recognition which explains the $30 price tag. Led by Kam Franklin they’re lively and I’m so glad they’re bringing JMSN (who was on 4 songs on Kendrick Lamar’s second album) back to perform with them. The Waxaholics are DJing the afterparty so you already know. Learn more here.
